Frequently asked questions
- What is Y Combinator?
- Y Combinator is a renowned Silicon Valley startup accelerator. Founded in March 2005, it runs intensive, cohort-based programs that aim to help early-stage startups grow rapidly. Four times a year, Y Combinator selects a batch of promising companies and provides them with $500,000 in seed funding, mentorship, networking opportunities, and guidance on various aspects of building a successful business, such as product development, market strategy, and fundraising. The program culminates in a "Demo Day," where the startups present their businesses to a large audience of investors. Y Combinator's reputation is built on its impressive track record of having funded highly successful companies like Airbnb, Dropbox, Stripe, Reddit, and DoorDash.
- How many times a year does Y Combinator run cohorts, and the Access Fund offer investment opportunities?
- Y Combinator runs 4 cohorts a year: Winter, Spring, Summer and Fall. Each batch is often referred to by its shorthand, such as W24 for Winter 2024 and X25 for Spring 2025. Summer 2017 would be referred to as S17, while Fall 2024 would be F24. Access Fund offers quarterly investment funds for each Y Combinator batch.
- What is Y Combinator Demo Day?
- Y Combinator Demo Day is a highly anticipated, invite-only event that marks the culmination of each YC accelerator batch. It's essentially a large-scale pitch event where the graduating startup founders present their companies to a curated audience of approximately 1,500 investors.
